Six years on from its publication, we're giving Where to Ski in Austria a boost by producing an update covering all the important lifts and new links in the resorts covered in the book – about 55 lifts in total.
These are the half-dozen developments most likely to swing your choice of ski destination.
2018 Bad Hofgastein– transformation of mountain access after many years of serious queues
2018 Hochkönig– linking of the village of Maria Alm to the Aberg lift base, cutting out the bus ride
2018 Zillertal – Mayrhofen– the hamlet of Mösl became a ski resort overnight with the opening of a gondola over a previously virgin mountainside on the fringe of the Penken area
2018/19 Kaprun / Kitzsteinhorn– the impressively ambitious project to link the village of Kaprun directly to its excellent glacier ski area, involving two 4km gondolas
2019 Zell am See / Saalbach– a short gondola in the Saalbach valley bottom completing at last the link between these two resorts
2020 Salzburger Sportwelt – Wagrain – the long-awaited high-altitude link between the two multi-valley networks that make up the Sportwelt; there is no skiing between the two, but by the unwritten rules of ski resort marketing this is now a seriously large area (cf Paradiski, Megève, Arlberg)
2023 Kitzbühel – two six-packs are removing the slow chair/draglift bottleneck on the way back to the town from the high Resterhöhe slopes
The photo included here shows another excellent improvement in Kitz – the Raintal gondola that replaced a venerable double chair on the back of the Horn in 2018.
